production. Revolving around a young man who breeds poison jellyfish that are
set free into a river, Bright Future stars man-of-the moment Tadanobu Asano,
Gemini's Ryo, newcomer Joe Odagiri and veteran Tatsuya Fuji (best known for
his work with Nagisa Oshima on In the Realm of the Senses). The ever irritable
Yuji is not very social. His colleague, Mamoru, who always watches over him, is
the only person Yuji could open his heart to. One day, Mamoru is arrested for
killing the president of the factory the two works for, Fujiwara, and his wife.
Mamoru commits suicide in jail, leaving the sign of "Go" which is understood only
by him and Yuji. In front of the confused Yuji appears Shinichiro, Mamoru’s father
who has not seen his son for a while. Although Yuji and Shinichiro belong to
different generations and have different ways of thinking, each of them comes to
see their own future through a jellyfish left by Mamoru.

(winning one for Art Direction). An all-star cast highlights the movie with such

Concert) at the Tokyo Dome. Against overwhelming pain in her legs, she performed a
total of 39 songs while assuring her fans that she had completely recovered. However,
on 24 May 1989, having been re-admitted to the Juntendou hospital in Tokyo, she died
from interstitial pneumonitis at the age of 52. Her death was widely mourned
throughout Japan. This DVD is the complete edition of Hibari Misora's Tokyo Dome
concert. It comes out as the last part of a series of releases in connection with the 13th
anniversary of the legendary singer's passing away. A must for fans. 39 songs

PERFECT BLUE

It's been five years since Satoshi Kon caused us to sit bold upright in our seats
with the weird yet wonderful Perfect Blue, a bizarre and bloody tale of a former
teen-idol turned actress plagued by a psychotic stalker and plunged into a world
in which the delineation between fantasy and reality rapidly becomes blurred to
the point of incoherence. Those, like myself, who at the time pondered upon the
reasoning behind rendering such a work as an animation are going to be doubly
perplexed by the recent decision to remake it as a live action feature - until, that is,
they realise that this newest is not so much a remake, nor even a re-imagining, as
a case of going right back to the original novel, written by Yoshikaze Takeuchi,
which formed the starting point for Kon's stunning feature debut. Perfect Blue is a
strong and suspenseful thriller that will maintain its replay value, even after you
know "whodunit." Its collapsing layers of reality give it an intriguing puzzle quality.
You may think that an live action film cannot match animation for a good, scary
mystery. But thriller fans of all stripes are encouraged to check this one out.

Former MTV director Hiroyuki Nakano follows up on his stylish pastiche of
samurai flicks with this slick romantic comedy. Set in Tokyo in 2002, the film
centers on Keisuke (Masatoshi Nagase), a fledgling actor who manages to snag
a bit part in a samurai actioner when he catches the eye of the film's star, Mika
(Kumiko Asou). This lucky break proves to be a mixed blessing, as the lead
samurai (Naoto Takenaka) is a vain prima donna who blames Keisuke for his
foul-ups. Keisuke's personal life is equally chaotic — his longtime girlfriend Eri
(Akiko Monou) just dumped him; and even though he finds solace in the arms of
Mika, he can't forget his ex. Meanwhile, Eri — who is mute in the wake of the
breakup — gets dragged to a panel discussion on the environment by her

and the two hold each other. Feeling the "vibration" of the truck’s idling, Rei feels
peace of mind that apparently comes from being embraced by him. At dawn, Rei

A movie about an amnesiac isn't anything special, but what about an amnesiac who, in
going to medical school to become a doctor, inadvertently begins dissecting the corpse of
his old girlfriend? Now that is something exceptional. Admittedly, Tsukamoto Shinya? Vital
is better in concept than in action, but this being the director of the legendary 1988 film
Tetsuo: The Iron Man, the work certainly is a trip. Though his post-Tetsuo films have gotten
scant, if any, distribution in the States, the fact that Vital stars the hyper-prolific Asano
Tadanobu may help the film be seen by more. Those coming to the movie under the
strength of his appeal may be in for a surprise though. As Takagi Hiroshi, victim of a car
crash which wiped his memory and killed his depressed girlfriend, Asano walks around the
film in a somnambulate daze only the dead would consider active.

WOMAN OF WATER

Woman of Water is set in and around a public bathhouse in rural Japan run by
Ryo (UA), whose name means "cool, clear water," and her elderly father. All the
major events in her life are accompanied by rainfall, most significantly the day
that both her father and boyfriend die in separate incidents during an unrelenting
downpour. Now alone, Ryo must run the bathhouse herself and come to grips
with her strange powers. One day she meets Yusaku (Tadanobu Asano), a young
man obsessed with fire, whom she hires to stoke the bathhouse's furnace. A
symbiotic relationship soon develops between these two personifications of
opposing natural forces. Writer/director Hidenori Sugimori came up with Woman
of Water specifically for UA, the eccentric, Björk-like Japanese pop star whose
stage name combines the Swahili symbols for "flower" and "kill." Like the
character she plays in the film, UA has always associated the important events in
her life with water, and Sugimori regards her as something of a modern shaman.
