Digitally Remastered 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen Version!

This is the first film in the long running series based on the real-life exploits of Edo’s North Magistrate, Toyama Kagemoto, who as a youth led a life of dissipation. While many in power do not take him seriously, Kin-san proves his worth by solving a mystery and rooting out corrupt government officials involved in a plot to assassinate the shogun. He’s most famous for the ”Blizzard of Cherry Blossoms” tattoo which he displayed by baring his right shoulder when confronting criminals. Later in court, he calls the tattoo to the attention of those denying their involvement by again baring his shoulder before sentence is passed. While not all the stories are true, Magistrate Toyama did make a major impact on the policies of the Tokugawa Shogunate during the early part of the 19th Century.

HUMANITY AND PAPER BALLOONS
Ninjo Kami Fusen - 1937 - Color - Fullscreen - DVD Extras

Widely regarded as Yamanaka Sadao's greatest achievement, Humanity and
Paper Balloons (Ninjo kami fusen) was, tragically, his last film, and only one of
three that survive today. In a short, six year, 22 film career Yamanaka quickly
earned a reputation for exceptionally fluid editing and a beautiful visual form
likened to the paintings of Japanese masters. The story develops in the
Tokugawa era of the 18th century, in a poor district of Tokyo, where impoverished
samurai live from hand to mouth among equally poor people of lower social
classes. One such ronin (masterless samurai) Matajuro, spends his day looking
for work whilst his wife, Otaki, makes cheap paper balloons at home. One rainy
night, Shinza, a barber, and equally penniless, impulsively abducts the daughter
of a wealthy merchant, hiding her at Matajuro's home. Their desperate plan has
grave consequences when a ransom attempt backfires. The film, which starts
and ends with suicide, is deeply pessimistic, insisting that life in feudal Japan
was hellish and short for those at the foot of the social ladder. Restored version.

IN SEARCH OF MOTHER
Mabuta no Haha - 1962 - Color -16:9 Widescreen - Extras

A wandering yakuza gambler Chutaro (Nakamura Kinnosuke) travels throughout
the country in search of his mother who abandoned him when he was 5 years old.
This is an unusual and sentimental story directed by noted film-maker Kato Tai.
Along with a number of other classics (most notably SWORD OF FURY, THE
CRUEL STORY, and FLAMES OF BLOOD) from this director, this is a well-made
movie with some interesting twists and turns. There's not too much action, but a
clever and moving story of the harsh life led by the wandering gamblers and yakuza
of the Tokugawa period. This is a fine example of a higly regarded director's best work.

ISHIMATSU THE ONE-EYED AVENGER
Hibari no Mori no Ishimatsu - 1960 - Color - 16:9 Anamorphic Widescreen - Extras

Some of the finest jidai-geki actors appear in this exciting and entertaining tale of
intrigue and action in old Japan. Teaming up the ever-popular Misora Hibari with the
greatest samurai action hero of all-time Wakayama Tomisaburo is a brilliant stoke of
casting. Hibari takes on the role of Mori no Ishimatsu, a young man who gets involved
with real-life Yakuza legend, Shimizu no Jirocho, 'Boss of the Tokaido'. Ishimatsu
manages to interfere with a dispute between the Shimizu and their competition, the
Marugame family, even going so far as to become an avenger’s assistant. It’s not the
first time Hibari has played a man in a film (also in Benten Kozo), and her acting skills
are at their best as she mixes in a bit of humor along with excellent swordplay.
Wakayama Tomisaburo, as always, gives an outstanding performance as the powerful
and beloved Yakuza Boss Jirocho. With removavble English Subtitles.

ISSHIN TASUKE: A WORLD IN DANGER
Isshin Tasuke Tenka no Ichi Daiji - 1958 - Color - Widescreen

This is the second film in the Issin Tasuke series starring Kinnosuke Nakamura. The first
film was "Edo no Meibutsu Otoko Isshin Tasuke", and it became a huge hit. Kinnosuke was
immediately asked to do a sequel, however, he was quite reluctant to agree. He was the
type to take every role very seriously, so he was very cautious. He did, in fact, learn how to
handle the fishmonger's knife, although it took a while, as they wasted 16 sea breams
before he got it right. There are 5 films in the series, which proved that Kinnosuke who had
grown up in the Kabuki world before moving on to the 'handsome swordsman type' in films
could also be cast as 'a cheeful handsome guy who could also do comedy'.

As an "Edokko" (native of Edo) Tasuke is known for his short temper, bad mount, and willingness to fight. He also possesses a genuine humanity, is quick to tears, and is a bit of a busybody who loves helping people. (This is a stand alone movie. TV Broadcast quality.)

KILLING IN YOSHIWARA
Yoto Monogatari: Hana no Yoshiwara Hyakunin Giri - 1960 - Color -16:9 Widescreen

The film that led David Shipman to declare Uchida Tomu "the equal of Mizoguchi and Kinugasa," Killing in Yoshiwara ranks with Uchida's finest postwar work. A glorious melodrama shot in vivid color and Widescreen and written by Mizoguchi collaborator Yoda Yoshikata, it is a feast. A successful textile industrialist from the provinces, who is beloved by his employees for his kindness, cannot find a wife because of a disfiguring birthmark on his face. Even the courtesans in Yoshiwara refuse to entertain him, until an indentured peasant prostitute, Tamarazu, takes the unsavory assignment and treats him with brash tenderness. The grateful businessman falls madly in love with her, ultimately losing his fortune in the expensive quest to purchase her freedom. This is a great story, with superb acting by screen-legend Kataoka Chiezo in the lead role. And the violent climax is directed with breathtaking assurance, a must see! It's perhaps the single most brilliant scene in Uchida's oeuvre!

When an incident occured at 7 a.m. on Jan. 2, 1629 in front of the main gate to Edo Castle it set in motion one of the most exciting stories ever told about the early days of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Just one day earlier, the Shogun's relatives and high ranking Daimyo lords had paid their New Year's respects. The next day was for lower ranking lords and Hatamoto retained by the Shogun to do the same. LORD OF STEEL HEART
Tekka Daimyo - 1961 - Color - Widescreen

One of Toei Pictures best Warlord epics, this film tells the story of Matabei Goto, a good-
natured retainer who enjoys his saki, while still being a master of military strategy.
Featuring a bravado performance by Utaemon Ichikawa as Matabei and strong support
from Tomisaburo Wakayama and the rest of the Toei all-stars, this is an excellent example
of the best that historical epics can be. After Tokugawa Ieyasu defeated the remnants of the
Toyotomi faction at the Battle of Osaka Castle, he seeks to test the loyalty of his retainers.
When Matabei speaks his mind at Sunpu Castle, it causes a breathtaking scene as the
tension rises. Utaemon, while best known for his swordfighting scenes always preferred to
usehis ability as an actor, with a steely gaze to melt down his opponents. A brilliant motion
picture, this is a real classic! (TV Broadcast quality.)
